Canvas Print Gifting Idea
Being a photographer it is quite normal that I love making prints of what I capture and what I really love. Landscapes, seascapes, flowers, loved ones, anything that catches my fancy finds its way to my digital image library and then sometimes make their way onto one of my home walls.Special Holiday Season Promotion: 70% off on select items from Snapfish! >> Use code SHINE
Being a photographer has its many advantages. You literally have more gifting options than most. I have always found it easier to gift using my own images. They have always been well accepted and admired for their ingenuity.
Speaking of gifting options, one of my personal favorites is the canvas print. The canvas print is a standard print, but instead of printing on photo paper it is printed on a canvas. It is then stretched and framed as a gallery wrap of wall mounting.
The best thing about canvas prints is that they can be manufactured in a multitude of shapes and sizes. There is always a size that fits the dimension and aspect ratio of your image. There are, however, some things that you need to consider before hitting that order now button. We’ll discuss them in this article on canvas print gifting ideas.
Know which Photo Makes a Good Canvas
Though technically, images from small sensor cameras can be printed on canvas, the problem starts when you choose a really large print size. The formula for a decent print is to choose an image with an optimum resolution. Invariably a high-resolution image is one that has been shot with a proper camera and with the high megapixel count.
Small cameras with high resolution have tiny pixels that are packed very tightly. These sensors suffer from low light issues and inherent noise.
Choosing the Size of the Print
Of course, you want to print. If you are particularly proud of an image, you made you would want to show off. But size comes with a price tag. The larger the canvas print / framed print, the more is the price involved.
Going small, on the other hand, is not always advisable. Let’s say that you have an ample space in your living room. A small 11 x 14 print would look tiny in that space. Also, if that area is central to the décor of the room and can be seen from a long way the size of the small image will defeat the whole purpose.
In order to print big, however, the image must be of a reasonable resolution. A reason why the camera you choose makes a big difference.
Framed or Just Print?
There are two different types of canvas prints available with most retailers. You could choose only to make a canvas print that is ready to be framed. Alternatively, you could order a ready to hang framed art print. Of course, the difference in price is substantial.
But there is the convenience factor attached with to it as well. You get a ready canvas print which you can hang in your living room or study.
Color Wrapping or Photo Wrapping
When a canvas print has framed edges the image is stretched and wrapped around the wooden frame. This wrapping can be a part of the image or a color of your choice.
I prefer a colored wrapping. This is because if the edges of the picture are to be stretched and wrapped around the frame it tends to crop away a lot of the image. The whole composition changes. There might be elements at the fringe of the image that I want to keep and they could get cropped away. This, however, is a personal choice.
