The train was operated by Direct Rail Services, who supplied two of their Class 37 diesel locomotives (37218+37425) to haul the train throughout from Paignton to Kyle of Lochalsh, Wick and Thurso. The road coach on the left was a private hire to take a party from the train on a tour of "The Wilderness", the empty miles over the mountains to Tongue, across the 'Top of Scotland' via a lunch stop at Bettyhill to John O'Groats, then on to Wick where the passengers rejoined the train.
